SUMMARY:Virtual PD: Academic Safety: Promoting Student Self Worth & Representation in Mathematics
DESCRIPTION:\n\nGeoff Krall will present Academic Safety: Promoting Self Worth & Re
presentation in Mathematics.\n\n\nPresentation Description:\nAcademic safet
y has perhaps never been as crucial as it is in this moment. How do student
s view themselves, each other, and the very discipline of mathematics? Acad
emic safety encompasses the social and emotional safety of the student as w
ell as the student’s perception of his or her own mathematical ability. In
this session, we will learn about the concept of academic safety through ha
nds-on experiences, data, and discussion. Special attention will be paid to
strategies that create an environment of active caring, a state of student
-teacher relationships that demonstrate to each and every student they are
an invaluable asset to the classroom and the mathematics community.\n\n\nAb
out the Presenters:\nGeoff Krall is an experienced educator, blogger, autho
r, speaker, professional developer and mathematician. He taught math in Tex

then joined the New Tech Network of schools as a math coach, delivering co

ry. While there he pioneered Problem-Based Learning as the primary mode of
instruction at NTN schools, training hundreds of teachers and dozens of col
leagues along the way. His first book, Necessary Conditions: Teaching Secon
dary Math with Academic Safety, Quality Tasks, and Effective Facilitation w
as published in 2018 and is currently available from Stenhouse Publishers.
He writes about math and education generally at emergentmath.com. Geoff liv
