September 2022: Welcome from the CCTM President, Mary Pittman

The CCTM Board spent the past few months planning a joy-filled year of learning events, opportunities to do math together, and ways to recognize and celebrate the work each of you are doing across the state of Colorado. I am honored to be the current president of CCTM and to be part of this amazing and dedicated group of educators.

As we start a new school year, I tend to be filled with hope for the future and also overwhelmed by the million things that need to get done. I also tend to get reflective. Today I am reminded of the words of Shakuntala Devi...

Shagunthala devi“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics.”

When I stop, notice, and appreciate the mathematics around me, I am reminded of the potential within each of us and our students to explore the world of mathematics and the power of mathematics to explore the world around us.

As you engage in the teaching and learning of mathematics this year, I hope you find this and future CCTM newsletters filled with opportunities to engage in synchronous and asynchronous learning with your colleagues. Links throughout the sections provide space for feedback, improvements, and suggestions.

In memoriam. Janet Heger, 76, of Cheyenne passed away on August 27, 2022. Janet received multiple recognitions throughout her years of teaching, including:  Outstanding Mathematics Teacher Award by the Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics (2001), Colorado Boettcher Foundation Teacher Recognition Award (2002) and Yuma Bank of Colorado’s Teacher of the Year Award (2005). Both of Janet's daughters, Michelle Chamberlin and Kate Canine, continued her work and dedication to mathematics education. Kate currently works in Poudre School District and is a former CCTM board member.
